The virus challenge is reminding us of the importance of responsive government…or the lack thereof. The timing of this challenge, while unfortunate anytime, should be a great catalyst to encourage our most thoughtful attention to the upcoming elections. We shouldn’t be electing rhetoric, partisan ideology or charismatic soundbites. We need to elect experienced candidates with the demonstrated ability to think, act, communicate and LEAD. Let’s honor our responsibility as We The People and choose wisely.

The recent impeachment debates and current political campaigns are reminders that there is considerable government and institutional dysfunction that must be reclaimed by WE THE PEOPLE. So it’s time to revisit our individual civic engagement roles, and determine how we can be most effective, not just busy. Join me as I suggest some considerations for doing just that. Our communities are as good as we choose to make them. Let’s choose our roles wisely.

Leadership Austin is celebrating its 40th anniversary and it has much to celebrate. The program, initially sponsored by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, has identified, trained and placed hundreds of well-trained and motivated “community trustees” throughout the community. The expanding alumni base can be found in prominent leadership positions in Austin government, non-profits, business and education. As an alum myself, I can attest to the importance of the program in nurturing a leadership base that can leverage many constructive resources. I’m proud to join others in celebrating this notable anniversary. CONGRATS, LEADERSHIP AUSTIN!

While we can strive to remain immature, as I try to model, we can’t stop the aging process. Our aches and pains attest to that reality. Another reality is that aging ain’t what it used to be, and there are many pills, potions, exercise regimens and innovative programs specifically designed to address those of us who are slightly beyond our midlife crisis stage. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a conference that dramatically opened my eyes, heart and mind to a new age of aging possibilities. As usual, our champions will come from our Friends in the Mirror and our Better Angels. We are called to be stewards of the Truth. To be well-informed ourselves, to encourage and model the same for others, while promoting CIVIL discussions relative to the issues of the day. Most folks of all ideologies want better than the mindless, stressful tribalism and political dysfunction that has typified the past three years. We can/must do better…TOGETHER.
