IN WHICH A WOMAN PREDICTABLY CAJOLES/INSPIRES ME TO ENLIGHTENMENT...

History oft reminds us that it takes women to equip us males to walk a righteous path. I humbly admit that I’m no exception. I’ve been the grateful beneficiary of the feminine influence and mystique, starting with my sister. Yes, sister Sara (we grew up poor, so we couldn’t afford an “h” for her name) honed her skills of intimidation and persuasion on me in our Wonder Bread Years. Her success with me laid the groundwork for her to first work for famous Defense Attorney Racehorse Haynes, before becoming Houston’s First Woman Assistant DA. But, I digress. Let’s talk about my journey to enlightenment.

BEWILDERED

An Early Image from My Publicist…or Perhaps My Mother…

The historically famous outdoorsman and tracker Dan’l Boone was once asked if he’d ever been lost. He replied, “No, never lost, but I’ve been bewildered for considerable periods of time.” Bewildered is a good descriptive for much of my life.

AN EARLY EXAMPLE OF THOUGHTLESS BEHAVIOR

One of the earliest images of a young male ignoring his admirer (my darling cousin Julie) while glued to his screen…

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Countdown to Brotherly Mischief…

In which I pull a “Peanuts” reverse, and prepare to pull the ball away so “Lucy” (Sara) will fall on her…but(t) I digress…Our mother bears witness to the impending brotherly indiscretion.

THE DAY OF RECKONING

The Day She’d Finally Had Enough, And Started My Redemptive Instruction…

I’ll never forget this transformative day, when she made me put on a coat and tie, marched me outside, and set up a white board that listed the 10 changes I needed to address to be a better person. I stood dutifully by, and a respectful couple of steps behind, as she outlined her plan of action for my redemption. The look on my face reflects the power of her admonitions.

MAJOR SIGNS OF PROGRESS

Celebrating My Progress at Comanche Springs in Ft. Stockton…

In her search for male role models, she admired older gentlemen with their sartorial sophistication, so required me to wear bow ties for a considerable period.

WITH GRATITUDE FOR STRONG WOMEN

And the winner is ME! I’m grateful that sister Sara got me off to a good start, and I learned to surround myself with strong women to challenge, cajole and humor me into being a better man and person. I’m blessed with an amazing partner, have a wonderful daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter who all inspire me to live up to their expectations.

And, by the way, here’s my little sister who grew up nicely herself. I’m grateful for her counsel, friendship and kindness. And good humor in putting up with me. Thanks, Sara!
