TIME FLEETETH! MY SON CLAYTON JUST TURNED 50 YEARS YOUNG...

1973…THE ADVENTURE BEGINS…THE PICTURES TELL THE STORY…

As I celebrate my son’s 50th birthday, I experience a roller-coaster of emotions. Reflections on the ups and downs of life. Hopes and dreams, successes and disappointments…Life. The arc of Clayton’s life encompasses considerable living. I’m so proud of how he’s negotiated options to become a great partner, father, business and community leader.

Rod Stewart reminds us that “every picture tells a story, don’t it?” It was fun for me to recollect a few of the stories I know, prompted by these images. Join me for some highlights of these five decades…

I used to be “Dan Bullock.” Then, I became “Clayton’s Dad.” I’ve proudly accepted that role.

POSITIVE INFLUENCES IN HIS “WONDER BREAD” YEARS…

On top of Bear Mountain, above Evergreen, Colorado…

Colorado had a major influence on my life. Still does. I introduced Clayton to Colorado early on, and he and our family enjoyed many excursions to experience the trees and streams and COOL of that wonderful state.

Learning to play an instrument…

We wanted Clayton to be culturally sophisticated, so encouraged him to play an instrument. We never lost hope. He felt that this hairpiece enhanced his creative endeavors.

Meeting Congressman J.J. “Jake” Pickle, who commended Clayton’s firm handshake…

We made every effort to introduce Clayton to a diverse group of community leaders, hoping that he might emulate their loftier behaviors and values.

IN WHICH HE LAUNCHES INTO THE BUSINESS WORLD

Studying for his Realtor exam while in Grand Lake, Colorado…I furnished the teaching tools to influence his success…

Clayton and the amazing Kerry Tate…

One of the best things I ever did for Clayton was to introduce him to Kerry Tate. She’s been a mentor, partner, golf buddy and friend. Kerry represents one of the several strong women who’ve influenced his success in many ways. These include Emily Moreland, Dawn Moore, Clayton’s wife Cora Oltersdorf, their daughter Georgia and, of course, Clayton’s Mom Gayle (more later)… Clayton and I are both grateful.

Here is the result of his cumulative efforts…He’s earned it…

Not All Work and No Play…A Grand Canyon Break…

A rafting expedition through the Grand Canyon…

It was most gratifying and parental tear-inducing when Clayton recited this wonderful Norman Maclean piece from the floor of The Grand Canyon. A big reminder of gratitude from this proud dad…

IT ALL COMES BACK TO FAMILY…

Clayton and Cora at an Austin event…

Clayton did a great job in choosing Cora as a partner, and I’m grateful that she allowed him to marry up. They’ve created and managed a wonderful family…

A great Family Selfie from Grand Lake…

Clayton’s wonderful Mom, Gayle Underwood Bullock

Gayle and her mother were hugely important in guiding and loving Clayton through his formative years, including the challenge of dealing with the tragic loss of Clayton’s brother to cancer. I’m forever grateful for Gayle’s personal commitment and sacrifice in this painful life chapter. Gayle was and is a great Mom and Grandmom.

An obviously proud Dad…

So, Willie’s 90 and Clayton’s 50! HAPPY BIRTHDAYS, GOOD GUYS!
