A FLOCK OF RED HAT LADIES…A DELIGHTFUL DISCOVERY!
So, I was traveling by ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island…a brief ocean adventure experienced by many of you. I’d spotted the colorful group as we boarded…had never encountered the species in any previous setting. Totally charming for many reasons.
I’d remembered the poem by Jenny Joseph, “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn’t suit me, and not care what others think.” (with some editing liberties) The wearing of the hats was so much more than a fashion statement. I was impressed and intrigued. I must not leave well enough alone. You know me. I had to engage.
THE ENCOUNTER
We intrepid travelers were given a few hours to mosey/saunter the island, enjoy a casual lunch and return for more Seattle merriment. I was casually exploring/observing when I encountered the flock of Red Hats in all their radiant glory, enjoying a light lunch and glass of wine before their return. I had no choice.
I summoned all my West Texas charm, approached their table, apologized for the interruption and quickly explained my intent. I told them my curiosity was two-fold. FIRST, I found them charming in their colorful regalia…representing a spirited independence that belied the many life challenges typical of their demographic. They smiled knowingly. SECOND, I told them that I was sad that my own mother could not be a part of the group. I relayed that my mother had always been one with too many excuses, too much reticence and no adventuresome spirit to join such a colorful independent group.
A TOAST OF GRATITUDE
I was thankful for the time, didn’t want to overstay my welcome. I thanked them for indulging the interruption, and proposed a toast. Here it was. What a delightful encounter with this group of friends and fellow travelers. Lessons for all of us of any age and demographic.
We’ve got lots of life to live, whatever that is. Let’s do it in Red Hat style!
POSSIBILITY….
