Covid lockdowns have been a convenient excuse to hide from lots of things. Issues, people, ourselves, our community challenges, etc. However, we’re now being freed to return to abnormal, and that includes opportunities and responsibilities. No matter how hard we try, we can’t fully escape governance and politics. We’ve had an extended year to reflect on the previous 5 years of political incompetence. “Melancolie” by sculptor Albert Gyorgy…sited in Lake Geneva…
Spring has sprung, and we’ve got many reasons to be optimistic. So, why are so many of us still stressed, tired and sympathetic with this sculpture? Five years of poisonous politics, layered with 15 months of Covid-19…enough to take its toll on most of us. Memorial Day reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice. So, the least we can do is raise our game in civic engagement to honor those who enabled our attempts at self-governance. We The People are better than this. Our children deserve better than this. The past many months of harsh politics, severe weather and Covid-19 have teed us up beautifully for a Spring Awakening. The brown-to-green seasonal metamorphosis is a very real life-cycle metaphor for our natural world and our politics. Wow! What a horrible year we’re leaving. We’ll need to be well informed and our healthiest best to serve ourselves, those dear to us and our communities. In this Mosey commentary, I reflect inspiration from Ann Richards and Tom Brokaw to spark my Better Angel New Year quest. Join me to see if some of this resonates. WISHING A HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
